PLANS to put double yellow lines on a Haworth road have been agreed, despite dozens of objections.

Keighley Area Committee approved the parking restrictions for Mytholmes Lane in order to reduce the risk of collisions on a dangerous bend.

Ward councillor Rebecca Poulsen welcomes the new yellow lines, which extend an existing parking ban, and hopes they will improve safety.

She said Bradford Council had drawn up the plans after householders expressed concerns to her about dangerous traffic near the Ebor Lane junction.

Cllr Poulsen added: “Residents had seen a number of near misses, where cars go across the centre line on the corner.”

Among objectors was the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds, which feared parking restrictions would affect elderly parishioners attending Sunday morning services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in nearby Ebor Lane.

The area committee last week agreed on a compromise, allowing parking on the double yellow lines on Sundays only, between 9.30am and 11.30am.

Keighley Area Committee originally earmarked money for the parking restrictions in April last year after receiving requests from residents.

Householders claimed parked cars were forcing drivers to cross to the other side of the road, potentially colliding with oncoming vehicles.

A council spokesman said: “Such manoeuvres are of particular concern when the oncoming vehicles are heavy goods vehicles or buses.

“Vehicles often park on the footway, blocking the way for pedestrians and mothers with pushchairs, forcing them to walk out into the main carriageway.”

The solution from council highways officers was a proposal for yellow lines running from the junction with The Hayfields down to a bus stop near the junction with Ebor Lane.

Objections to the proposal included a petition signed by about 70 people, a “standard letter” submitted by more than 80 people and the letter from the Diocese.

Objectors pointed out more than 150 people from several outlying villages attended Our Lady of Lourdes on Sunday mornings, including many pensioners.

Cllr Poulsen said highways officers had tried to work with the objectors.

She added: “They came to a compromise over Sunday mornings. Hopefully this will appease the objectors.”
