A STEETON play area is to undergo a complete overhaul.

Steeton-with-Eastburn Parish Council has been awarded a total of £67,000 by two landfill tax distribution organisations – Yorventure and Wren.

Yorventure has awarded the council £25,000 through funds generated by Yorwaste Ltd, while Wren has given £42,000.

This is in addition to £950 already contributed by local businesses, and more than £380 raised by the Steeton parent and toddler group.

The council will be contributing up to £6,300 of its own resources to the project.

The money will be used to completely refurbish the play area next to the community hub and bowling green in the village.

The project will include new playground equipment, safety surfacing, seating and fencing.

It has been designed with the help of children and parents at Steeton Primary School and the parent and toddler group.

An order has been placed and it is expected work will start in late autumn.

Parish council chairman Cllr David Mullen said: “Parents and children have asked for a new play area and now we have the funds to deliver it.”

Wren managing director Peter Cox said: “Wren is committed to funding projects that make a real difference to local communities, children and families.

“The new play area will provide a fantastic space for youngsters to get outdoors and have some fun.”

Angela Pease, Yorventure’s community project manager, added: “Yorventure and Yorwaste Ltd are delighted to be able to support the play area.”
