COUNCILLORS have welcomed a delay in controversial plans for new housing on an Oakworth greenfield site.

The deadline for formal submission of a planning application for 140 homes in Occupation Lane, Oakworth, has been put back to October 31.

The postponement means residents and councillors have longer to prepare for a Bradford Council meeting where proposals will be discussed.

Objectors have argued the development of the 4.7hectare site by Persimmon Homes will cause a “traffic nightmare”. Countless objections had been submitted to the council, with many people claiming roads close to the site will be unable to cope with the anticipated influx of extra vehicles.

Councillors Adrian Farley and Jan Smithies, who represent Keighley West ward, welcomed the delay, as well as additional work the council has requested from developers in response to concerns from residents and councillors.

The application was expected to be discussed by the council’s regulatory and appeals committee on November 13, but the determination of the application is now likely to be heard on December 11.

Coun Farley said further consultation is likely to be held on November 3.

He added: “This further consultation period is to allow residents and consultees to comment on the submitted further information and revised proposals.

“However, all previously submitted representations will be retained and reported to the committee.”

Coun Smithies said: “We are committed to providing ongoing support so residents can put forward the strongest case possible within planning law.”

Wayne Gradwell, managing director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We are currently working with officers at Bradford Council to deliver an amended scheme layout. We are looking forward to presenting our application at the next available meeting of the regulatory and appeals committee.”
