HAWORTH'S own Home Guard platoon is starring in a new blockbuster Dad's Army movie.

Members of the group took part in filming at the weekend for the major production, based on characters from the classic BBC sitcom.

About 20 'soldiers' were in Bridlington on Saturday for the shooting of a street scene.

Among them was 47-year-old drayman Dale Elsworth, but he was playing the role of a civilian rather than marching with his colleagues.

And his parents, Brian and Hazel, were also involved.

"A producer came along to one of our Home Guard meetings the other week and asked if we wanted to be extras in the film," said Dale, of Southfield Mount in Riddlesden.

"Quite a few volunteered.

"My dad's done some work as an extra before – he's had roles in films such as Calendar Girls and Cottingley Fairies – but this was my first time.

"It so happens I've been growing a pencil moustache for Movember so I pointed it in the style of a 1940s spiv, which fitted in quite well with my character. "

Dale, who works at Naylor's Brewery in Cross Hills, had to be on set for 7am and knew little beforehand about what was going to be expected of him.

"I knew I was going to be in a cheering crowd but not a great deal more!" he said.

"I enjoyed the experience but it was hard work.

"There was a lot of standing around, for the whole day, as they shot the same scene several times.

"I was in the crowd cheering as the Home Guard marched along the street.

"My parents were in the same scene, as a gamekeeper and his wife, but they were positioned further down the street.

"It was good fun and I would certainly do it again."

He got to see several stars of the film, including Bill Nighy – who plays Sgt Wilson – and Alison Steadman, of Gavin & Stacey fame.

Filming of the movie began last month and is being carried out entirely in Yorkshire.

The production is a collaboration between Universal Pictures, Screen Yorkshire and DJ Films.

It is directed by BAFTA-nominated Oliver Parker and other stars include Catherine Zeta Jones, who plays glamorous journalist Rose, Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring, Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones, Michael Gambon as Godfrey, Blake Harrison as Pike, Danny Mays as Walker and Bill Paterson as Fraser.
