DENHOLME’S Mechanics’ Institute has been officially re-opened by the Lord Mayor of Bradford after completion of a £100,000 facelift.

Councillor Mike Gibbons opened the refurbished rooms at the historic building in Main Street, where improved amenities are the result of community effort in gaining grants.

Some £75,000 came from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) with additional grants from Bradford Council, Bradford and District Association for Mental Health, Banks Community Fund, local groups and individuals.

One major change is a farewell to the old Blue Room, now stripped of its fixed seating, painted a glowing orange and renamed the Community Room.

Other alterations during works, which began in the summer, include a sparkling new kitchen, plus a disabled ramp and wheelchair accessible toilet, which were completed in time for the opening.

“It’s been a professional job throughout and it’s superb,” said mayor, Councillor Steve Nunn.

“And it’s thanks to Denholme Community Association, which put together the bids for funding.

“Everyone is really pleased with the outcome – especially the new Community Room.”

Coun Nunn said the venue now combined tradition with all modern facilities, and was available for hire and use by all social groups.

He said an immediate hit was the regular film night, which was much improved thanks to a permanent projection screen and the installation of a hearing loop.

“With all the threats of cuts and closures to other community centres in the district, we are so lucky to have what is a very important asset right in the heart of the town,” Coun Nunn added.

“The Mechanics’ has served generations, and now it will go on to serve future generations too.”

The grand opening event on Saturday was also attended by the Lady Mayoress, Elizabeth Sharp, who received a bouquet of flowers from Denholme Gala Queen, Angel Mpofu.

Others attending included MP Philip Davies, Coun Simon Cooke, representatives from WREN and Bradford and District Association for Mental Health, town councillors and about 80 residents.
