CHRISTMAS 1914 was the theme of a production by children from Sutton Community Primary School.

Pupils from years five and six played out the story of the First World War truce, to an audience at the Fells Theatre in South Craven School, Cross Hills.

Over 300 people attended and sang along to songs including It's A Long Way To Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles.

The performance was the culmination of a term's learning centred on the centenary of the start of the Great War.

"As ever our children did us proud," said headteacher Mrs Fiona Beetles.

"Christmas 1914 was a poignant mix of the old blended with the new. The set included old photos of Sutton which really brought the story home to us and there were more than a few tears in the audience as the young soldiers in the cast marched off to war believing it would all be over by Christmas."

She thanked South Craven School head Dr Andrew Cummings and his staff for allowing the Fells Theatre to be used.
