The Gala committee is once again holding its Christmas market on Sunday when stalls will be both outside (up Briggate and around the front of the Punchbowl Inn) and inside (in the town hall). Refreshments will be available so why not have a walk down and perhaps make a start on your Christmas shopping – or for those organised people, get some last- minute ideas.

The Methodist Church is holding its annual Christmas tree festival. The festival will take place over the wwekend of December 1 and 2, with opening times on Saturday from 9am-4pm and Sunday from 2-4pm. The theme this year is Christmas stories and refreshments will be available throughout. Santa will be visiting on the Saturday. Free admission although donations will be welcomed. On the Saturday morning the Coffee, Cakes and Cameraderie coffee morning will run with the usual refreshments. The book stall will be taking a break to revitalise in January. There will be lots of stalls offering great bargains for Christmas presents and food plus a fantastic display of trees all decorated around a central theme. The refreshments will continue until 4pm for the festival. Silsden Band will be playing carols outside (weather permitting) at about 10.30am. Children’s activities from 10.30-11.30am and again from 1-2pm. A bumper Christmas raffle plus much more.

Why not go along to a Christmas shopping evening at Aireview Infant School on Thursday, November 29 from 7.30-9.30pm for an evening of shopping with friends. This costs £3 per person which includes a glass of wine or juice. There will be stalls by Partylite candles, classic Shique clothes and jewellery, What Women Want bags and jewellery, Bliss Gifts, Chomping Chops sweets, Phoenix Cards, Ann Summers, scarves, handmade sweet jewellery, Giddy Chimp kids, Clinique, Glamour Puss bags and purses, handmade jewellery, Christmas cakes and puddings, Fresh & Fruity Fairtrade, Magpie Jewellery and FM Fragrances. There will also be a palmist charging £10 per reading, on a first-come, first-served basis. A raffle will be held during the evening.

A well-attended November meeting at the Ladies Circle heard Michelle Houghton, from Duttons for Buttons, give a most interesting talk. Firstly she explained how the business started in 1956 with a shop in Harrogate followed by two more shops in York and Ilkley. Michelle oversees the three shops and has worked for them for 27 years. She followed with a history of buttons themselves with some examples and photographs of very early ones. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 4, at Silsden Methodist Church from 7.30pm when Linda Gunn will talk about the Gambia Schools Trust after which there will be a faith supper.

The annual exhibition by the Camera Club will be held in St James Church hall on Saturday from 9.30am-noon. Entrance will be £1 to include refreshments. There will also be a raffle at £1 per strip which will be drawn at around 11.45am.
