Members of Keighley Rotary Club have taken part in a global advertisement supporting the battle against polio.

Each member's photograph features in “The World’s Biggest Commercial” along with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and actor Jackie Chan.

Thousands of people are pictured one after the other using their fingers to make a sign meaning "this close".

They are referring to the current state of a 30-year international campaign by organisations including Rotary to wipe out polio.

Rotary says that when the campaign began in 1995 polio affected 350,000 people a year but now, following the immunisation of more than two billion children, the disease has been reduced by 99 per cent.

A spokesman said: “Fewer than 700 new cases were reported in 2011, and the wild polio virus today is confined to isolated pockets in only three countries.

“We truly are ‘This Close’ to ending polio forever.”

The intention of the This Close campaign is to ensure that world leaders continue efforts to eradicate polio.

Local people are urged to get involved in the campaign by visiting the website endpolio.org/en. Video footage from the commercial can be seen there.
