Keighley school children have joined pupils across the district in activities to mark national Road Safety Week.

Youngsters from Eastwood and Keighley St Andrew’s primary schools are taking part with police officers in Speedwatch sessions.

Motorists caught exceeding the speed limit will be sent letters, by the police and pupils, highlighting the dangers of speeding.

Also, as part of the campaign, Bradford Council's road safety team is leading training sessions and assemblies at primary schools district-wide.

And college students are being given personal testimonies by emergency services officers and parents of car crash victims, to learn first-hand about the devastating consequences of speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Road Safety Week, which began on Monday, is organised by the charity Brake. This year’s theme is Slower Speeds=Happy People.

Events locally have been staged by the council, with the police and fire and rescue services and Bradford Safeguarding Children's Board.

Davina Hartley, from the board, said: “We are happy to support and promote Road Safety Week. Slower speeds lead to fewer road traffic collisions and ultimately fewer deaths and injuries. It is important that everyone takes responsibility for reducing their speed when on our roads.”

Keighley motorists are being urged to book a sight test to coincide with Road Safety Week.

The plea has been issued amid concerns that many people are driving with inadequate vision.
