Tales of Keighley’s policing past are to be showcased to the public thanks to a new lottery fund.

Amateur historians have been given an All Our Stories grant of £9,900 to research and present the material.

Keighley and District Local History Society will work on the Keighley Police Archive, which is kept in the town’s civic centre.

The centre, in the former Keighley police station in North Street, houses a police museum in the old cells.

The history society has become one of the first groups in the UK to receive a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s All Our Stories scheme.

The grant scheme, launched in support of BBC2’s The Great British Story, was designed to give everyone a chance to get involved in their heritage.

In Keighley, society members will work with young people, former police officers and other local people to develop media and communications skills.

Society chairman Andy Wade said: “This grant will allow us to start making an important part of our past accessible to the people of Keighley.

“We are all really looking forward to working on the project and hope a wide range of people and community groups will benefit.”

Fiona Spiers, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Yorkshire and the Humber, said the success of All Our Stories showed the UK was a nation of storytellers who wanted to dig deeper into their past.
