Marking ten years of Fairtrade recognition

A gathering of about 30 people marked Haworth’s ten years of recognition as a Fairtrade village.
They met at the Old Hall pub, in Sun Street, for a celebratory cake, looked back on what they had achieved over the past ten years and looked ahead to the next decade.
Haworth was the world’s first Fairtrade village having been awarded the status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
The status recognises the village’s commitment to ensuring better prices, decent working conditions, and ethical treatment for farmers and workers in the developing world.
The Rev Chris Upton, who is on the steering committee of Haworth Fairtrade group, said: “The celebratory night was very enjoyable. We recognised that the job is not yet done, that the world has changed in the past ten years and will hopefully continue to change.
“We don’t know what the future holds. But the fairtrade paradigm is about making a sustainable world, which is more just, fair and equal. It’s hard work and there’s a lot still to do.”
