Help to keep on top of post-festive budget

A Cross Hills-based company is offering advice to people feeling the financial strain in the aftermath of Christmas.

Debt Advisory Line, of Riparian Way, has outlined some straightforward measures to cut costs and ease the financial burden.

John Goodfellow, executive chairman, said: “The Christmas period is a time where people tend to overspend, and once January comes, can leave many concerned over spiralling debts.

“Unfortunately it seems that debt will be apparent for many in 2013. They may feel like there is mounting pressure on them, but with a little budgeting and planning their finances, they can take more control for the year ahead.”

He said people should focus on maintaining all payments on ‘priority debts’ such as mortgages or rent, secured loans, utilities and child maintenance.

He also recommended that people should create and stick to a realistic monthly budget, retain receipts to help tally up any unnecessary expenditure, and economise on utility bills by taking quick showers and using a heater timer.
