Irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets are being put under the spotlight.

Bradford Council has released a list of hotspots, with 1,111 dog fouling reports received between January 1 and October 31 last year across the district.

But officials say catching offenders is “proving extremely difficult”.

Most complaints in the Keighley district were in Central ward, where there were 51, closely followed by Keighley West (49).

Other figures locally were 43 in Bingley Rural, 42 in Keighley East, 32 in Worth Valley and 31 in Craven.

A report, due to be discussed by Shipley Area Committee last night, says tackling the problem is a priority in the majority of wards. It said: “It is rare for a member of the public to know exactly who is responsible, or they are reluctant to say who they are. The majority of dog walkers are out in the early morning and early evening and wardens have targeted campaigns to address the issue.”

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said walkers who failed to clean up after their dogs could be issued with fines.

He added: “If we have information we can take action.”

The council has increased the number of neighbourhood wardens who can issue fixed penalty notices.
