Keighley man, 27, caught drink-driving after funeral

A 27-year-old Keighley man was more than twice the legal limit when he drove home from a funeral, Skipton magistrates heard.

Benjamin Roy Gill had been to his mother-in-law’s funeral in Skipton and was driving home with his two stepdaughters when he was stopped on the A629 at Cononley, the court was told on Friday.

He provided a positive roadside breath test and was taken to the police station, where a urine sample showed he had 251 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine. The legal limit is 107.

Gill, who admitted drink driving on November 29, had been drinking following the funeral, but had believed he was safe to drive, the court was told.

He had been a council worker for ten years, but had handed his notice in knowing he would be banned from driving. He has since got a lower paid job as a labourer.

Gill, of North Dean Road, was banned from driving for 18 months and fined £250. He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £85. His ban will be reduced by a quarter if he completes a drink drivers’ rehabilitation course.
