Swapping pipes for pens has seen a Silsden resident switch careers from being a plumber to a children’s author.

David Driver, of Oak View, who has been a volunteer reader for pupils at Aire View Infants School, is taking advantage of the digital revolution to get his work published.

He continues to work as a college lecturer, teaching students about plumbing and heating systems, but is starting a new chapter by also putting pen to paper.

Mr Driver said: “When my youngest daughter started at Aire View Infants, I worked as a voluntary reader and formed a friendship with headmistress Vicky Bottomley and her staff.

“This inspired me to further myself within teaching, and I ended up teaching part-time at the local college, which led to a full-time position in the plumbing department.

“I’ve always loved writing and telling stories since I started school. When I married and had children of my own, I decided I wanted to be published and to write full-time to earn a living.

“My wife showed me an article about publishing books to Kindle Direct Publishing, via Amazon. I’m doing this now, as it’s a platform and an opportunity to showcase my work.”

Mr Driver said he loves to write children’s books, as well as horror and dark fantasy genres.

He added: “Children’s books are real fun, and it’s always good to see young people laughing and smiling at your work and asking for more.

“My wife should get a big thanks for supporting and encouraging me, and both my daughters have been brilliant with their feedback.”

Mr Driver, 43, has created three short stories for youngsters – Mr Zachaponti and his Extra Fizzy, Multi-Flavoured Lemonade; Dr Mysterious and the Tommy Rottens and The Curse of Aggie Nettle. They are available via Amazon books to download to Kindle, PCs and Android phones.
