Hundreds of people took part in this year’s Keighley procession to celebrate the birth of the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

The march set off from outside the Emily Street Mosque and followed a route into the town centre, then back through Lawkholme, finishing at the same mosque about an hour later.

Organisers said the event, which has now been running for 25 years, was a “brilliant success”, which enjoyed a high turnout and dry, relatively mild weather.

Abid Hussain, senior vice-president of the Keighley Muslim Association, thanked everyone who took part, and also highlighted the support offered by businesses, the young stewards, Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police.

“It was one of the best ever parades we’ve had,” he said. “The route was the same as last time, but we set off a little earlier this year to help with the planning.”

Sunday’s event was arranged by the Keighley Muslim Association, and featured devotional chanting and hundreds of green banners, along with food and refreshments offered by local businesses.

Prayers and speeches were delivered at the Emily Street Mosque at the end of the procession. The parade was also covered by GEO News, which is a satellite television news channel based in Pakistan.
