Moorland blaze warning after Denholme fire

Firefighters spent about two hours tackling a moorland blaze near Denholme.

The fire affected about 200 square metres of the moor, off Trough Lane.

Two appliances – from Keighley and Illingworth – were called out to the incident at 1.30pm on Sunday.

A specialist Land Rover wildfire unit, based at Keighley, also attended.

Beaters and water jets were used to extinguish the fire. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

The incident was the latest in a series of grass and moorland fires across West Yorkshire.

Watch commander Paul Turner, of Keighley fire station, said: “We’ve had quite a sustained period without significant rain and, as a result, the ground has become unusually dry for this time of year.

“We would ask people when they are out and about to be extremely careful and not discard cigarettes or matches, and take litter away with you.”
