Volunteers in Keighley have helped worldwide archive project Family-Search reach an historic milestone.
One billion historical records have been transferred from hand-written archives to online documents, with Keighley people typing in hundreds of them.
FamilySearch is a free service provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In the Keighley area, a group of people of all ages spend several hours each month carrying out the indexing process. One of them, 18-year-old Ruth Henson, said: “Indexing is my way of saying these names on an old document are not just names, but real people just like me. They deserve not to be forgotten. They deserve a legacy.”
Many more names will be inputted, including 4.5 million soldiers who fought in the First World War.
Gill Keeley, a volunteer family history advisor with the Mormon Church in Keighley, said: “It involves our own grandparents and great-grandparents, who fought so valiantly for our freedom.”
