Harness racing in aid of Manor-lands has reined-in a new main sponsor.

This year’s event – on June 30 – is being backed by Keighley-based Davidson Site Services.

Owner Paul Davidson has handed over a £500 cheque.

Each year he chooses a Manorlands event to sponsor and invites his staff, friends and family to attend.

He backed the Mascot Gold Cup in 2011 and Woodfest last year.

“We’re delighted to support Manorlands – it’s a great local cause and we always have a fantastic time at their events,” Mr Davidson said.

The Bronte harness races – held on the same Haworth Road, Cullingworth, field that hosts the Bronte Vintage Gathering – start at 2pm. There will be nine races, plus official on-site bookies, a licensed bar and funfair.

Organiser and field owner, Robert Thompson, a member of the British Harness Racing Club, urges people to go along and sample the sport.

“Those that don’t know what it involves should imagine Roman chariot racing, with horses pulling riders around a circular track on lightweight chariots called sulkies,” he said.

“A handicapping system is put in place so each race is guaranteed an exciting finish and an adrenaline rush for those with money on it.”

Sue Ryder fundraiser, Matthew Binns, said: “The fact there is no race track or dog track within many miles of Bradford and Keighley means this is a great chance for local people to experience a thrilling day at the races.

“We are delighted to have the kind support of Davidson Site Services, and we’re encouraging folk to come racing in Cullingworth and support a good cause at the same time.”
