Haworth, Oxenhope, Lees & Cross Roads Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association 'biggest and best yet'
10:00am Saturday 24th August 2013 in Keighley
An annual flower and veg show at the weekend has been hailed by organisers as the biggest and best yet.
The event – held by Haworth, Oxenhope, Lees & Cross Roads Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association – attracted 60 exhibitors.
And there were 500 exhibits on display at the Haworth Community Centre venue in Butt Lane.
Sunday’s flower, vegetable and produce show was the 95th staged by the association.
Chairman, John Shires, said: “About ten years ago, the show nearly went out of existence – entries were right down.
“Now we have one of the best in the North of England. It coincides with the Southport show, one of the biggest around, but we hold our own extremely well and the standards are exceptional.”
The show includes an auction, which on Sunday raised £320 for Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands. There was also a raffle and tombola.
Show secretary, Geoff Wilkins, paid tribute to the class sponsors, which enable prize money to be awarded, and local businesses for donating items.
“Over the years, shops and businesses in the community have been very generous, and we are extremely grateful for their continued support – it is appreciated,” he said.
Exhibitor, Noel Kitchen, said the Haworth show continued to blossom.
“It is absolutely fantastic,” he said. “It attracts a very good level of entries.”
