Keighley’s Ukrainian community gathered to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of their country gaining independence.

About 20 people took part in the event at the Ukrainian Community and Cultural Centre in Henry Street, Keighley.

Guests included town mayor, Councillor Sally Walker, who paid tribute to the contribution made to Keighley’s cultural life by Ukrainians since they first arrived in the area in the 1940s. She was accompanied by her husband, Martin.

The event was opened by local association president, Peter Szczur, and goodwill messages were read from the Ukrainian Embassy and the president of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

Secretary Stefan Pryimuk spoke about Ukraine’s history, and there was a toast. The country’s flag was flown in Town Hall Square.
