David Cameron has backed a classroom ban on wearing the veil.

The Prime Minister threw his weight behind any schools attempting to outlaw the Niqab, provided parents had been consulted properly.

And his stance is backed by local Tory MPs Kris Hopkins and Philip Davies.

Keighley MP Mr Hopkins said: “I believe, when it comes to issues of identification and security, people shouldn’t wear the veil, but the vast majority of Muslims I have spoken to understand, and respond to, that.

“I don’t think the Prime Minister is going over the top, as long as these concerns are put in a sensible way and we don’t give ground to more bigoted people to exploit this.”

Mr Davies, whose Shipley constituency includes Cullingworth and Denholme, added: “It should be for schools to decide for themselves, but I would certainly support any that decided to ban its students from wearing the veil in school.”

The Keighley News reported last week how the town’s Muslim Association has rallied in defence of women wishing to wear the full face veil.
