Harden turf event is now ‘must go’ fixture
A world-renowned turf research company at Harden recently opened its doors to greenkeepers and groundsmen from across the UK.
The two-day event at STRI – formerly the Sports Turf Research Institute – was designed to give industry professionals an insight into latest developments.
There were demonstrations of innovative products, equipment and techniques currently undergoing scientific trials by the company’s team.
Several research partners, including Aquatrols and Bayer, were also involved.
The event, now in its third year, has grown into an annual ‘must attend’ fixture for many within the sports industry.
STRI chief executive Gordon McKillop said: “This year’s event was a resounding success – with our best turnout yet – and in just three years it has established itself as a key date in the industry calendar.
“It provided the latest insight and expertise from our own scientists and industry experts to a wide variety of sports professionals and turf managers. This will no doubt help to improve and sustain the quality of their surfaces, whether it’s an 18-hole golf course or a football pitch.”
Issues covered included the management of turf in challenging conditions, as well as nutrition, and latest technology and machinery was showcased.
An insight was also provided into emerging trends, which will have an impact on the industry in the next few years.
STRI, based at the St Ives estate, was established in 1929 specifically to provide research and advisory services for golf courses, but its clients now cover many sports. Top tournaments, ranging from Wimbledon to world and European football championships, have benefited from STRI’s services.
