New Keighley Town Council complaints and grievance panel is formed
10:00am Sunday 13th October 2013 in Keighley
Members of Keighley Town Council has agreed to let one of the committees appoint a new complaints and grievance panel.
The resolution was put forward by Councillor Michael Westerman and backed by Coun Judith Brooksbank.
They recommended the panel should be formed of five councillors, and would be responsible for considering both complaints made against councillors by members of the public and those made between councillors.
These matters currently have to go before the council’s full management and staffing committee.
Coun Brian Morris, however, said: “What would be the point of this panel if it has no legal power to take action against a councillor?”
But Keighley Mayor, Coun Sally Walker, replied serious issues could be taken to the Standards Board instead, adding the new panel would still have a useful, advisory role to play.
Councillors voted to refer the matter to management and staffing, whose members will decide on who will be appointed to the panel.
