Protest outside Keighley supermarket
3:50pm Saturday 19th October 2013 in Keighley
People opposed to the building of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land encouraged people to sign letters of protest outside a Keighley supermarket.
Bradford Palestine Solidarity Campaign members gathered outside the town’s Sainsbury’s branch earlier this month.
A campaign spokesman said: “According to new research, some suppliers are sourcing produce from these settlements on Palestinian land and labelling them as ‘Produce of Israel’.
“We are asking Sainsbury’s to stop trading with these companies, as the occupation of Palestinian land is leading to the destruction of the Palestinian agricultural sector.
“Sainsbury’s has a good record on fair trade, and are founder members of the Ethical Trading Initiative, so we’d like to see them go further and follow the lead of the Co-operative and end this trade with companies operating in Jewish settlements.”
Commenting shortly before the action outside the Keighley store, a Sainsbury’s spokesman said the business was a non-political organisation, which sources its products to meet the safety, quality and ethical standards expected by its customers.
The spokesman added its suppliers must follow the labelling guidelines on how to display the country of origin on products, enabling customers to make informed choices about what they buy.
