Keighley family feeds poor as tribute to dad
9:00am Monday 28th October 2013 in Keighley
A Keighley family entered into the true spirit of a major Muslim festival by donating food to the poor and needy in the town.
Brothers Abdul Kalam and Abdul Salam, who live with their family in Skipton Road, bought and cooked ingredients for meat and vegetable meals to give to the Intouch Foundation charity during Eid al-Adha.
The group feeds homeless and other deprived people once a week in Keighley town centre, as well as in Bradford and Shipley.
The brothers and their other family members prepared the food last Wednesday, then delivered it to the Intouch volunteers in time for their evening serving in Church Green.
Abdul Kalam, 35, said: “As well as doing this for Eid, we’ve also done it in remembrance of my dad, who passed away a couple of years ago.”
He explained his father, Hazi Irshad Ullah, had also given food to the poor for many years at Eid.
Mr Kalam said cooking the meals had been a big job, but added he and his family now hope to make this an ongoing annual contribution.
