Keighley charities are preparing to ‘winter-proof’ Keighley pensioners through a new £10,000 scheme.

Volunteers will clear snow from paths and driveways so older people can get out without the risk of falling and injuring themselves.

Snow wardens will be a new service combining with existing ones under the banner of the Winter Warm Good Neighbours Project.

Keighley Volunteer Centre and Keighley Community Transport hope the four-pronged project will help OAPs and people with disabilities maintain their safety and independence during severe weather conditions.

The centre’s long-established handyman team will carry out essential repairs and adaptations to people’s homes.

Meanwhile, Community Transport minibuses will take pensioners to local shops, and cars will transport them to health appointments.

The Winter Warm project was announced as another charity, Age UK, expressed concern about the number of older people who die as a result of winter weather.

But the Keighley charities hope their Winter Warm project will play a part in protecting vulnerable town residents.

Volunteer centre manager, Gary Pedley, said his team was keen to hear from anyone who could offer their time to help others, either after a snowfall or during the winter months generally.

He added: “We are looking to recruit as many people as possible. This is the time you can really make a difference.

“We will provide volunteers with training, support and equipment needed, and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.”
