Helping others has gone to the heads of a youngster and a school admin assistant.

They have had their locks lopped for good causes.

Six-year-old Ellie Crawford, of Gibb Street in Cowling, has been shorn of her long blonde hair to help a family friend who has been fighting cancer.

It will be made into a wig for eight-year-old Glusburn youngster, Tyler Manley, who is recovering from a major operation to have a tumour removed from her brain.

Two staff from the Cross Hills Hair Shop cut Ellie’s flowing locks during an event in the village Co-op in Main Street on Saturday morning. There was also a raffle, with prizes arranged by Ellie’s gran, Joyce Crawford, who works in the shop.

Ellie’s mum, Leanne, 32, said: “It was fantastic.

“Ellie is made up – she loves her new haircut. Her hair is now wrapped up in tissue paper and we’ll deliver it to Tyler this week.”

She added she was currently counting up the money raised via collection tins stationed in Cross Hills and Cowling during the past month. The cash will go to ward 52 at Leeds General Infirmary, where Tyler was initially treated.

Meanwhile, James Moorhouse – who works at Beechcliffe School in Keighley – has had his head shaved to boost the coffers of two charitable causes.

His effort raised more than £700, to be split between Cancer Research UK and a fund to buy a new school minibus.

Friday’s head-shave was carried out by the four pupils donating the most money to the worthy causes – Finn Hughes, William Lister, Robert Smallwood and Eve Presland.

“The kids loved it and were cheering!” said James, who was 25 yesterday. “One or two people have said they like the new look but I’m not so sure – it certainly feels very strange! I was delighted with the amount raised.”
