Ambitious plans to transform a famous former mill store into an outdoor pursuits centre have been welcomed.
Councillors say the £1 million scheme would be a boon for the area.
The Keighley News revealed last week proposals to convert the old Ponden Mill site near Stanbury, which has stood empty since the retail outlet shut in late 2008.
The planned three-storey centre would accommodate between 64 and 70 people, mainly in dormitories, while there would be a public cafe on the ground floor.
Camping provision would also be included as part of the initiative, which would create up to 20 full and part-time jobs.
Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council chairman, Coun John Huxley, said: “I think it’s a very positive thing for the area, given the number of people who walk, ride and take part in water activities. The mill has been empty for far too long.”
Members discussed the proposals during their meeting on Monday night and recommended plans be approved by Bradford Council.
Rebecca Poulsen, a Worth Valley ward councillor on Bradford Council, said: “I haven’t seen the detailed plans, but in principle it sounds like a fantastic scheme. At the moment, the site is a wasted space.”
Plans have been submitted to Bradford Council by Oxenhope resident Richard Trainer, who bought the Grade II listed building more than a year ago.
