The first ever cultural festival to accompany the countdown to the Tour de France is now underway.

The 100-day Yorkshire Festival 2014 began last Thursday, and features 47 spectacular headline commissions, as well as hundreds of fringe events embracing a huge range of different art forms.

Henrietta Duckworth, the festival’s executive producer, said: “All of the 47 headline projects, as well as the fringe events, are ready to reveal a myriad of opportunities across all art forms for fun, invention and festivities for all ages.

“And, inspired by Le Tour, the largest free annual sporting event in the world, the majority of Yorkshire Festival’s programme is free to access. Everyone is invited to this party.”

People can find out more by visiting the yorkshirefestival.co.uk website.

‘Fields of Vision’ – a project originating in the Worth Valley – is among the main festival commissions. This is a land art initiative, building on an idea first put forward by Worth Valley Young Farmers Club.

It will be delivered by a partnership co-ordinated by Pennine Prospects, and will include huge land art installations across the South Pennines, including locations in Hainworth, Stanbury and along the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

The scheme is being backed by community engagement group Worth the Tour, the Keelham Farm Shop in Thornton and Alfe’s Restaurant in Keighley.

Keelham Farm Shop is offering a member of the public a chance to create one of the land art designs destined for a field in Hainworth.

It is working with Fields of Vision to launch a competition, which invites entrants to draw a simple, bold design, which to them symbolises Yorkshire.

A winner will be selected by a panel of judges, and their entry will be created in the field by the land artists.

Victoria Robertshaw, co-owner of the farm shop, said: “We love Yorkshire and farming is our lifeblood, so we’re really excited to support one of the sites in the Field of Visions project.

“We thought this was a fantastic opportunity for a member of the local community to be a part of this landmark art project.”

Competition entrants can visit keelhamfarmshop.co.uk and download an entry form. This can be posted back to Keelham Farm Shop, Brighouse and Denholme Road, Thornton, Bradford BD13 3SS or e-mailed to help@keelhamfarmshop.co.uk. The closing date is midnight on April 22.

The winner will be announced on May 9, and the artwork will be completed in the field in early June.
