A&E housekeeper Bob Tallon has become an even more familiar face in the department following his ‘star’ appearance at the opening of a village store.

Mr Tallon was invited to officiate at the launch ceremony of Steeton’s new Morrisons Local, in recognition of his long-standing dedication to the Emergency Department.

“I was delighted when hospital officials put my name forward as a ‘local hero’, and it was a great opportunity to join consultant Meg Crossley at the store opening,” he said.

He added: “In my role, I see a lot of very sick people and find that many of them appreciate a smile and joke, and the favourite is always a cup of tea and slice of toast – and I am only too happy to provide that service.

“I also try to get the chance to have brief chats with some of them, and there has been a lot of interest in the Emergency Department Appeal.

“It is lovely to see donations being handed to our nursing and reception staff. Every penny will go to the appeal total.”

Mr Tallon said: “I see first-hand how the little things can make a big impact, so I would encourage everyone to do their bit to help us reach our target.”

Hospital fundraiser, Bronagh Daly, paid tribute to his efforts.

“We have been receiving small cash donations since Bob started spreading the word,” she said.

“Comments from patients who make these donations have been in thanks for the smiles and also the tea and toast they received from Bob, who certainly does know how to use good humour to put the patients at ease.”
