The West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner is calling for greater awareness of cyber crime following an attack on eBay.

Mark Burns-Williamson said the hacking of the auction website highlighted the importance of addressing the issue – one of his priorities – at all levels.

“Cyber crime has become an increasing concern for the West Yorkshire public, and it is estimated cyber-related fraud alone costs the UK economy £27 billion a year,” he said.

“There is no doubt cyber crime is a part of many crimes these days, from fraud to serious organised crimes.

“There is a large amount of work being done to raise awareness and make the right investments in skills, and working with not only the public sector bodies, but private sector too.”
