Keighley people are being urged to keep an eagle eye on Keighley Tarn to help cut down on crime.

Police, local councillors and Neighbourhood Watch coordinators plan to set up a Tarn Watch scheme at the popular beauty spot.

They plan to provide a single contact point for all complaints about a wide range of incidents at the lake above Braithwaite.

Problems have included fly tipping, general littering, drug dealing, dog fouling and unusual bird deaths.

Regular visitors to the Tarn – including some who visit every day – could be encouraged to keep an eye out for trouble without putting themselves in danger.

District councillor Jan Smithies said the Tarn Watch scheme was its very early stages of discussion.

She said: “All of us get reports of incidents, but we don’t usually get enough information to follow them up. It’s complaints rather than evidence.”
