Tory group leader Glen Miller reports himself for investigation

THE leader of Bradford Council’s Conservative group has reported himself for investigation after allegedly being caught using taxpayer-funded council stationery for electioneering.

Worth Valley councillor Glen Miller, who was re-elected for another four-year term in last month's council elections, said he had made an “honest mistake” and would reimburse the local authority in full.

It is understood that a complaint has been made to Bradford Council that before the elections, Coun Miller had used taxpayer-funded council paper and envelopes to print election material on.

Coun Miller did not want to comment on the details of the allegation – such as whether the materials concerned were leaflets or letters, or how many had been printed.

He said it would be inappropriate to talk about it while a council investigation was ongoing.

But he added: “It was an honest mistake. I am in the process of rectifying it and the council is going through its own process.”

Coun Miller said as soon as a council officer had reported the allegation to him, he had admitted it.

He said: “We make mistakes in life. As soon as it was pointed out to me, I said, ‘yes, I did do that’.

“I have asked them to give me the costs and I will reimburse them for it.

“I have reported myself to the standards committee and I will make a donation to charity.”

Coun Miller said the donation would be made to the annual Lord Mayor’s Appeal as a gesture of goodwill.

A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “An allegation has been made and we are looking into it.”

Coun David Green, leader of the Labour group, declined to comment on the matter.

But Coun Jeanette Sunderland, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said: “He’s clearly been caught banged to rights, and he has done the right thing by owning up.

“That is commendable, he could have tried to hide it.”

She said the incident could hopefully spark a wider debate on what was and was not acceptable to put on official council letters.

He contravened Election regulations simple as that and for that reason alone he has to be disqualified from the election result.

He used public money its as simple as that he stole money from everyone that pays council tax.
No amount of charitable donation can take away that fact as well as the fact he broke election rules.
There is only one conclusion and that is gross misconduct and criminal intent.
If the Electoral Commission does not disqualify him from the result it will make a mockery of all elections throughout the nation and not just here.
The rules are plain and simple regarding this and if the Electoral Commission does not abide by their own rulings then I dread to think what will happen in future elections.

cllr miller has been a councillor for many years and has been the leader of the tories on bfd council aswell and still is , the point we all should address is that he has all the knowledge of election rules and regulation at hand , its the same as a shoplifter walking out of a store then being challenged and saying oops sorry i forgot to pay so i will go back in and pay , bradford district councillor and conservative group leader miller should do the decent thing and resign as group leader at least , also if this was a keighley town councillor or a labour cllr all the cavetown gang including david samuels, simon mitchell , jan rotherham , elizibeth mitchell, graham forsyth and the others would be up in arms calling for a public flogging in the town hall square ,where are you all with your comments or would you be kicked out of the tory party if you dared to comment .

I see Councillor Miller has been caught red handed. How can he even dream to think anyone is going to believe his excuse “it was a honest mistake” All prospective candidates who stood for election had the same rules to abide by, it appears Councillor Miller wanted to have a head start on his opponents and effectively cheat the system and the electorate. It isn't as though he is new to electioneering after all he has been the leader of the Conservatives for a number of years now. Surly this election result should not now be allowed to stand. To say it’s ok as he has owned up to it is a laugh he had no alternative after being caught bang to rights. The conservatives should replace him and a new election held, I believe his actions have brought the party and Council into disrepute. If you can’t trust the leader of the party who can you trust? They of all people should be seen to be clean.

this has proved a huge point , being that cavetown state that they are saving the ratepayers money being wasted , but it looks to me that they only comment about keighley town councillors and dont dare speak out against the tories due to the fact that on their own site it states that churchill house has asked them to step up their efforts against ktc .

In the defence of the Cavetown "gang" members (I can't verify if the title is still correct as their website has now gone seen as their campaign is over) they have always focussed on KTC rather than BMDC apart from the lack of perceived support from district councillors.

Their soul target has been, and from what has been said will always be, KTC.

It's certainly been quieter on these pages recently - though the usual characters continue to spout off on the Keighley Forum FB group. This is an "open" group often for those with closed minds!

The difference ntc, is Miller apparently held his hand up, while ktc have not been very helpful when questions have been asked. The CC especially I won't bother going into it (silly man)we have all read about it on the various sites.
I agree with Mr Pullen, Cavetown or whatever, their focus is KEIGHLEY TOWN COUNCIL and the way the precept payer is having to keep the CIVIC CENTER afloat. The cost approximately 200.000 pounds a year. I am being kind the cost is probably higher.
Anyway shouldn't you be listening to the role playing headmaster. Ours used to slap us for being naughty, and it wasn't with a wet lettuce.

No but Ian advised that the website fees were due for renewal and as the campaign was finished it was no longer needed.
