KEIGHLEY MP Kris Hopkins has welcomed a decision to allow women to become bishops.

The General Synod of the Church of England this week voted in favour of the historic move, which had been rejected by lay members two years ago.

“This is a good day for the Church of England which has never been shy in offering advice and thoughts to others about equality and thankfully will now be able to practice what it preaches," said Mr Hopkins.

“It is the established church in this country and should be providing a lead rather than be dragged along towards modernity.

“The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, deserves immense credit for his work behind the scenes to make this historic day possible, as do other leading and charismatic figures such as the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu. They are wonderful ambassadors for the Church of England and for Christianity across the world."

He added: “I hope the change will receive the full support of lay members as we look forward to the appointment of the first ever Church of England woman bishop. It cannot come a day too soon.”
