WORK starts tomorrow on a £100,000 scheme to reduce sewer flooding risks to homes in Keighley.

And the seven-week project will mean the provision of temporary traffic lights in one of the town's busiest roads.

Engineering specialist Mott MacDonald Bentley, working on behalf of Yorkshire Water (YW), is to install a large underground chamber in Skipton Road.

YW project manager, Lee Laherty, said: “We understand this will cause some inconvenience but we’d like to assure local residents and road users that we’ll do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We hope customers will bear with us, as regular sewer flooding has occurred in the area over the years and it's important we reduce this risk.

"The team will use a new technique called positive surcharge protection, in order to protect the properties from flooding.

"This involves installing new storage capacity along with non-return valves to isolate affected properties during heavy rain. The system will also mean the company can keep an eye on the situation remotely before discharging storm water safely back into the sewerage system, when flows are lower."
