A YOUNG boy who was badly hurt in an accident at Keighley's North Beck remains critically ill in hospital.

Police confirmed the news earlier today. The eight-year-old was injured on July 27 after falling into the water at Tinker Bridge, off North Dean Road.

It is believed that the boy hit his head when he fell in, and was unconscious beneath the water's surface for about five minutes.

Nearby residents were alerted by a group of children, and a fire fighter pulled the boy out of the beck following a search.

Since the accident, the emergency services have urged people to steer clear of playing in rivers, lakes and canals.

At least one Keighley councillor has called for safety warning signs to be installed at Tinker Bridge to help prevent another tragedy.
