A SUMMER ball in aid of a former mayor of Keighley raised £460 for the hospice which helped care for him during the last days of his life.

The event at the Three Acres, in Cross Roads, was held in memory of Councillor Brian Hudson, who Coun Hudson died in January of this year, aged 72. He had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis.

The ball included an auction, a three-course meal, performances by a saxophonist and a disco.

Pub assistant manager Emma Hudson, who is Coun Hudson’s granddaughter, organised the occasion which took place in late June.

Coun Hudson's son, Mark, said: "We appreciated Manorlands before my father died, but when you rely on it because someone close to you is being looked after there the importance of it hits you even harder."

He added that entertainers at the summer hall had offered their services free of charge, and said further fundraisers for Manorlands were being planned.

Coun Hudson, along with his wife Maureen, had served on Keighley Town Council since its foundation in 2002.

He was mayor of Keighley for the 2007/08 civic year, and his wife was mayoress. Before the town council was formed he had been a member of the Aireworth Reform Association, which campaigned for Keighley to have its own council.
