BRAITHWAITE and Guard House residents are being challenged to get green-fingered.

They are being asked to design and build raised beds and planters for the estate’s new community allotment.

Their efforts will help transform the rundown site off North Dean Road into a thriving attraction offering activities for all ages.

The planter building session on Wednesday (September 3) is the first of several planned Community Challenge Days at the site.

The allotment is being set up with a £9900 grant from the Big Lottery Awards For All fund and is being led by community worker Pip Gibson.

A successful launch day in July attracted dozens of local people for activities like foraging, fire pit cooking, bird box building and planting.

Several people volunteered to attend sessions over the next few months to build and plant the large plot on the existing Keighley Town Council allotment site.

Planned activities included vegetable growing, a community shelter, outdoor cooking, a reading circle, a bird garden, a fairy glade and composting.

The Community Challenge will run from 10am to 4pm, and the allotment can be accessed through the Greenfield Court car park at the bottom of North Dean Road.

People are being advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear. Lunch and refreshments will be served all day.

Anyone interested should call Pip on 07587 210101 or turn up on the day.
