KEIGHLEY'S branch of the Salvation Army has been chosen to benefit from the town mayor's 2014/15 charity appeal.
Keighley mayor councillor Graham Mitchell announced last Thursday that he would be supporting this good cause.
He said: "I visited the Salvation Army Hall in High Street to witness the on-going work of the Salvationists in their operation of a food bank.
"It seems to me that the very existence of food banks for the poor in a developed European country in the 21st century highlights a great failure in our organisation of society.
"I was impressed to hear the proposals of the Salvation Army to try to break the vicious cycle of dependency through food banks, and to try to address the totality of poverty and need of the people in this town who really struggle to get by.
"I've therefore decided that any funds raised for the mayoral charity during the rest of my civic year will be donated to the Keighley Branch of the Salvation Army to support their overall work with the disadvantaged members of our community."
