A TOUR de France-inspired iPhone game which 'takes' players through Yorkshire has been launched – but it by-passes the Keighley district!

The actual world-famous cycle race in July came through Silsden, Keighley and the heart of Bronte Country.

But none feature in the Yorkshire’s Great Race game, which is riding high in the iPhone app store charts.

Players can race through the streets of locations including Leeds, Sheffield, York, Harrogate and Holmfirth.

And there are facts about landmarks and attractions in the Bradford district, but the closest to this area are Ilkley Moor and Saltaire.

Digital agency twentysix, whose mobile division developed the game, said there was no deliberate decision to omit any locations.

But Worth Valley district councillors have voiced surprise that Haworth's iconic Main Street in particular was not featured.

"The day after the Tour the main photo in all the newspapers was of the cyclists in Haworth Main Street," said Coun Rebecca Poulsen.

"To completely ignore the location seems very strange."

Ward colleague Coun Glen Miller, the Tory group leader on Bradford Council, added: "It's extremely surprising that a very important part of the Tour route has not been mentioned."

Sam Watson, senior mobile account manager with twentysix, told us: "We endeavoured to incorporate into the game all the great destinations in the region that the race passed through, but the Yorkshire stages of the race were vast and in turn not all towns and cities could be included.

"Twentysix continually adds to and develops its games and apps and we’re keen to ensure all the region’s destinations are featured in Yorkshire’s Great Race in future developments."

The free multi-level game has generated thousands of downloads from across the world, including America, China and France.

Gail Dudleston, global chief executive officer of twentysix, said the feedback had been excellent.

"We’re delighted with the interest and downloads from across the world," she added.

“The summer’s cycling event has – and will continue to be – a key part of the region’s economic development, while it also put Yorkshire firmly on the map for tourists and sport lovers alike.”
