AN ALLOTMENT group refused to throw in the trowel when a promised marquee failed to materialise on the morning of its annual show.

Plot holder Mary Taylor stepped in with an offer of her poly-tunnel.

"That enabled entries to be staged there and judged virtually on time," said a Silsden Allotment Association spokesman.

The show – organised by Fiona Parkinson and John Cobb, and held on the Elliott Street allotment site – attracted 82 exhibits across produce, domestic and family classes.

Top performers for the second year running were Liz Mortimer and the 'Gibson Gang', whose harvest basket of mixed vegetables took the best-in-show title. They were also the pick of the crop in the runner bean and single vegetable classes.

The most popular class was for tomatoes, won by Elsa Slater. Other victors included David Mason, for potatoes and fruit and preserves; Barry Thomas, for onions and the tallest sunflower; John Cobb, carrots and eggs; Brian Waterhouse, for beetroot, and Clive Dickinson, cut flowers.

The baking section was dominated by Sonia Cobb, who claimed first place in all classes except jam.

And prominent in the children's craft section were Mr Mason's grandchildren, Jayan and Asha, and Isabella Taylor.

Awards were presented by Peter Smith, and a buffet lunch was served.
