THE FIRE station in Haworth which is due to cease operating as a retained fire station at the end of this year will host a "commemorative event" next month.

Members of the retained Haworth fire fighting team are inviting all current and past staff and their families to the station for the occasion, which takes place on October 11 from midday onwards.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The building, which was constructed in 1965, will no longer operate as a fire station from December 31 this year, as part of our Integrated Risk Management Plan.

"The October 11 reminiscence event, which includes food and refreshments, will be the final chance for people to look round the building, in Station Road, and share stories, photos and memories."

Please wanting further information about the day are asked to contact fire fighter Robert Rutter by e-mailing Robert.Rutter@westyorksfire.gov.uk Following the initial announcement that the fire station was to be axed a campaign to keep the facility open led to a two-year stay of execution.

The campaigners have since been working on a plan to turn the property into a community-run safety hub for the Worth Valley. If successful, this would involve the creation of a volunteer-run service that would be trained in fire prevention. The building would also become a base for neighbourhood policing.
