HAWORTH thrives on its distinctive reputation, but a bid to paint double yellow lines down the village's Main Street produced a quirkier than intended result.

The "wonky" lines, which were painted on the street's setts on September 10, have provoked amused and exasperated responses from some local residents and councillors.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council chairman, Councillor John Huxley, said: "It is very wriggly. It looks like the person who did it must have used a machine that needs a flat surface and can't cope with setts.

"It looks a bit silly, and given the sensitivity of the area you'd think they could have done it properly and done it well."

Coun Huxley added that he was surprised that the yellow lines had been painted prior to a public meeting on September 15, where proposals to alleviate traffic disruption on Main Street were due to be put to Bradford Council for consideration.

"I wasn't aware they were going to do this before the meeting had even taken place," he said.

A Bradford council response last Friday (Sept 19) made no reference to the standard of the line painting work.

However, Simon D'Vali, principal highway engineer for the council, said: "We're currently working on a scheme for the upper section of Main Street which will replace the missing double yellow lines with a Controlled Parking Zone that involves signing only.

"This section is between the Fleece Pub/Butt Lane and West Lane/Changegate.

"As there are no changes planned for the lower part of Main Street, between Rawdon Road and the Fleece Pub, the single yellow lines on the west side and the resident parking bays on the east side which were very worn and faded have been renewed."
