A SCHOOL greenhouse has been formally opened by the widow of a gardening-loving Craven councillor who died earlier this year.

The facility in memory of the late coun Michael Kelly was opened by Carole Kelly at Steeton Primary School.

The £1,000 to pay for the greenhouse and improve its surroundings came from the money left in a Bradford Council ward investment fund originally administered by coun Kelly.

This cash was allocated to the Steeton Primary greenhouse project on his behalf by fellow Craven councillor Andrew Mallinson.

Mrs Kelly said: "I think it's a wonderful idea. Mike would have been absolutely delighted."

Coun Mallinson said: "Michael had an interest in gardening and he used to be a governor at this school, so there is a very strong link."

The greenhouse, located on a sloping site above the school buildings, includes a memorial plaque on its base.

Head teacher John Cooper said: "We've revamped the whole area and the greenhouse is the icing on the cake. It's big enough for groups of eight pupils at a time to go inside."

School support assistant Angela Jackson said: "It's lovely, and it means we'll be able to grow more plants and flowers from seeds and progress them more easily. The children enjoy it, they really get stuck in and they take good care of the plants."

Coun Kelly, who lived in Addingham, died in February at the age of 70 after a long illness.
