RECORD numbers took part in the tenth annual Bronte Mountain Bike Challenge.

The event, which started and finished in Oxenhope, attracted 294 riders.

And about £9,500 was raised for Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands.

Participants could choose from three routes, each named after a Bronte sister – Charlotte, Emily and Anne.

Manorlands-based Sue Ryder fundraiser, Andrew Wood, said: "We were delighted with the excellent turnout and the weather was perfect.

"One person was unable to finish because of bike failure, but otherwise there were no problems.

"Although it's called a mountain bike challenge it is also popular with cyclo-cross riders, using it as training for the Three Peaks race.

"Walkers Chartered Accountants was the main sponsor and ran the Anne route, and Aire Valley Cycles were the start/finish sponsors – we are extremely grateful for all their support.

"We'd also like to thank all the volunteer stewards and marshals. We couldn't have run the event without them."

First home on the Charlotte route, in two hours two minutes and 59 seconds, was Joe Moses.

Second was Anthony Spalding, in two hours seven minutes and 19 seconds, and third Tom Hooper in two hours 10 minutes and 52 seconds.

The fastest woman was Donna Waring, in just over three hours.

Winner on the Emily route, in one hour 58 minutes and 50 seconds, was Robert Brook.
