A THREATENED village gala has been saved.
Around a dozen people turned up at a meeting called in a last-ditch attempt to keep Cowling Gala going.
The future of the annual event, first held over 75 years ago, was thrown into jeopardy when the former committee stepped down and an initial plea for new volunteers met with a limited response.
But now plans are going ahead for next year's extravaganza and villagers are being asked what attractions they would like to see.
"We managed to get together a group of about 12 people who are all passionate about keeping the gala going – we don't want to see it die," said Mrs Sally Horner, the new co-chairman.
"We're having another meeting next month and would like people to come along to let us know what they want."
The meeting is at the Bay Horse pub on November 12, at 7.30pm.
Next year's gala is scheduled for Saturday, July 25.
