KEIGHLEY Royal British Legion has launched its annual Poppy Appeal.

And organiser Tommy Thompson has made a rallying call to the public.

"Last year we raised a record £35,379 and it would be wonderful if we could get somewhere close to that figure again," he said.

"The support we received was fantastic and I would urge people to do whatever they can to help this year."

The legion has use of a unit in the Airedale Shopping Centre – adjacent to the Next store – which is open from 10am to 4pm every day except Sundays until Saturday, November 8.

People can buy poppies and other merchandise from there, and pick up collection boxes and poppy wreaths.

"We are looking for more volunteers," said Mr Thompson.

"Folk can help in all sorts of ways, such as by assisting with street or store collections.

"Just call at the unit. You'll be made very welcome."

Last year, about 250 collection boxes were distributed to schools and businesses throughout the area.

And veterans and army, air and sea cadets helped sell poppies on the town's streets in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday.
