SCHOOLCHILDREN have re-enacted the famous football matches that took part between German and British soldiers on Christmas Day 1914.

The pupils of Lees Primary School played the matches as part of a day commemorating the centenary of the First World War.

Children dressed in period costume and invited parents and carers into school to watch the matches.

The original matches took place in No-Man’s Land – between the British and German lines – during an unofficial ceasefire on the Western Front.

Parents were also able to see work produced by the Lees pupils over the past few months as part of their studies of the First World War.

On display in the school were several of the ceramic poppies that until last month had been in place around Tower of London as part of a public artwork.

Refreshments were sold at the school, with all proceeds being donated to the Royal British Legion.
