A TWO-week challenge set by the head of South Craven School triggered an energetic response from a group of year 12 students.

Dr Andrew Cummings tasked pupils with turning an initial sum of £10 into more cash in aid of a good cause.

Seven year 12 students reacted by deciding to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

A spokesman for South Craven explained: "The idea was originally suggested by Ewan Smith and was quickly taken up by six other students.

"After suitable preparation the group set off one morning at 7am to walk up Pen-y-ghent, followed by Whernside and finally Ingleborough, arriving at the finishing point at 5.34pm, just as it was getting dark.

"It was a hot day with only a bit of wind, so the going was fairly tough, but luckily the group had parents to meet them at various checkpoints with extra supplies and encouragement.

"By the time they finished all were very weary but happy and proud to have raised over £450."

The money is being donated towards the charities Mind and British Heart Foundation.
